RECRUITMENT 101

Are you curious about the process of joining a sorority? This page is an extensive guide for all who want to know about Panhellenic’s Primary Recruitment at the University of Alberta!

Q1. What is Primary Recruitment?…

Primary Recruitment is how all four of our sororities recruit new members in the Fall Semester at the University of Alberta. It’s our biggest recruitment event of the year!

ROUNDS

Recruitment is four days, with a celebration (Bid Day) at the very end of the week. Every day you’ll get the chance to learn new information about the organizations by speaking directly with their members. This way you can find your home away from home!

To attend these rounds, an undergraduate student must register for Primary Recruitment using this link. A more detailed summary is found below.

Scholarship Round - The first round of Primary Recruitment. This round, you get to visit all four sororities and speak to their members directly; specifically learning about their academics!

Sororities will provide the following:

  • A list of academic programs the sororities run for their members.

  • A list of scholarships the organizations provide for academic excellence.

  • The sorority’s academic expectations and support programs for if you need help in school.

Philanthropy Round - The second round of Primary Recruitment. This round you’ll have the chance to visit all four sororities to learn about their housing, and their philanthropy; a specific charitable cause they support.

  • How the sorority serves (volunteering, donations, and charity work) their philanthropy.

  • The expectations the sorority has for their members involvement with charity work.

  • A description of their house, and how a member can apply to be a resident!

Chapter Pride Round - The third round of Primary Recruitment. This round, you get to visit all four sororities and learn about their membership dues, and the pride their members have for their organization.

  • The sorority will give you a financial breakdown of how much it costs to be a member; and where that money is going.

  • You’ll get to learn about the grants each organization offers its members.

  • Sorority members will get the chance to express why they love their organizations and how they strengthen their friendships.

Preference Night - The final round of Primary Recruitment. This round, you’ll get to visit up to two sororities for a semi-formal event. At the end, you’ll get to make your final decision for which sorority you want to join.

  • This is your chance to reflect on the connections you’ve made throughout the week. You’ll get to have personal conversations with people you’ve met, and experience (what most consider) their favorite night of recruitment.

Q2. WOW! Why is there a whole week of events? Do I have to do this on my own?

We strongly encourage you to attend every round. That way, you get the chance to meet all of our members, get a deeper understanding of our organizations, and a strong sense of which sorority truly connects with you. From a glance, the schedule looks daunting at first, but the experience is one you’ll never forget, and it’ll go by in a flash!

When signing up for recruitment, your Recruitment Counsellor will help you with your schedule so the events don’t interfere with your day-to-day life. You’re never alone during the process, and you’ll make memories to last a lifetime!
